In
Rajasthan to the West, and Tamil Nadu, down south what blinds you
is the proliferation of colours.
In
Rajasthan the ghagra skirts, glittering with mirrors and sequins,
swing to the rhythm of anklets and chimes in the desert air. The
gaily dressed women balance pots on their heads, lending infinite
charm and grace to the mundane daily chore of collecting water from
the village well. The kancheepuram silk and cotton saris ubiquitously
worn by the women in Tamil Nadu, at home and for religious and social
occasions, are characterised by a combination of brilliant contrasting
shades - orange with purple, parrot green with shocking pink. The
older generation of Tamil Brahmin women drape their saris in the
traditional style, drawing one end tightly between the legs and
the other over the shoulder.
If
the bright colours are getting too much for you, move deeper south
and rest your eyes with the stark, white elegance of the traditional
Kerala dress. Our national dress, the sari, has over a hundred variations.
And it is in this fact itself that the story of India is told. Our
people clothe themselves in deference to the climate, the culture
and the craft of the region in which they live. It is in the waft
and the weave that their story is woven. Our tour aims to take you
through a journey of the divergent textiles and costumes of India.
You can explore and discover the dyes, the motifs and the fabrics
that give each creation its texture, its symbolism and its heritage.
It is an opportunity to witness a magical yarn unfolding.
