Rajasthan
lies separated from the Ganga's plentitude by the watershed formed
by the Aravalli range. The Aravallis and the plateau of Hardoti
are the highlands which channel the monsoons away creating a desert
in the west.
In
the historical time-scale, civilization came to Rajasthan before
the rest of India. If Harappa culture(2500B.C.- 1700B.C.) is the
general starting point of the evolution of Indian civilization,
Rajasthan takes precedence. Some of its pre-Harappa locales like
Kalibagan provide ample proof of an organised and ariculturally
proficient society.
Rajasthan
is a state immersed in history. It has a past replete with princes
and palaces, battles and imposing forts. It is a fairytale land.
A land where opulence breathes with the same intensity as power.
Even today the turrets, domes, jharokhas and the massive gateways
are witness to the might and majesty of the erstwhile rulers. Architcturally
the state is inundated with a display of grandeur.
Making
a living in the desert has not robbed the locals of their zest for
life. In fact it seems to hone their aesthetic skills. From the
intricate miniature paintings to its unique frescos the monuments
bear testimony to the flamboyance of the people. Rajasthani handicrafts
are well loved all over the world. And the use of colours and materials
are unabashed. Even
cloth is infused with a riot of colours and given a texture that
transcends its mundane reality. Rajasthan can transform. Almost
like a fairy's wand its power enmeshes and then captivates. In Rajasthan
it is the fantastic which becomes real.
